Matcha Health Benefits

What Matcha Actually Does.

Matcha gets talked about a lot. Most of it is vague. Here’s what the plant actually contains, and what that means for the person drinking it.

1. Sustained energy without the crash

Matcha contains natural caffeine and L-theanine in combination. L-theanine slows the release of caffeine — the result is 4–6 hours of focused energy, without the spike and drop that comes from coffee. The calm is built in.

2. 137x more antioxidants than brewed green tea

Because you’re consuming the whole leaf after it is stone-ground into powder, meaning you get the full antioxidant load. Not a steep, not an infusion but the whole thing. EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) is the compound doing most of the work.

3. High chlorophyll content

Shade-growing forces the plant to produce more chlorophyll. First-harvest ceremonial matcha carries significantly more than later harvests. Chlorophyll has been studied for its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties.

4. L-theanine for focus and calm

L-theanine is an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea plants. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and promotes alpha wave activity, i.e. the brain state associated with relaxed alertness. It’s why matcha feels different from coffee.

5. Supports immune function

EGCG and other catechins in matcha have demonstrated antimicrobial and immune-supporting activity in peer-reviewed research.

6. Zero additives, zero fillers

Meiso contains one ingredient. That’s the whole list.

7. Slow ritual as its own benefit

There is something that happens when you stop, boil water, sift powder, and whisk by hand. The act of preparation is part of why people come back to it every morning.

The benefits above apply most directly to ceremonial grade, first-harvest matcha — where the L-theanine and EGCG concentrations are highest.
